Charpy Impact Testing Services

Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory provides ISO/IEC 17025 accredited Charpy V-Notch impact testing to evaluate the toughness and impact resistance of metallic materials. Our laboratory performs testing in accordance with ASTM and other industry specifications to help manufacturers verify material performance under dynamic loading conditions.

What is Charpy Impact Testing?

Charpy impact testing measures the amount of energy a material absorbs when fractured by a sudden impact. The test is commonly used to evaluate material toughness and determine how a material will perform in service at various temperatures.

Charpy testing is often specified for critical components where resistance to brittle fracture is essential, particularly in low-temperature or demanding service environments.

Testing Standards

Hurst performs Charpy impact testing in accordance with applicable industry standards, including:

  • ASTM E23 – Standard Test Methods for Notched Bar Impact Testing of Metallic Materials

  • ASTM A370 – Mechanical Testing of Steel Products

  • Customer specifications

  • Industry and aerospace specifications

Testing can be performed to customer-defined temperatures and acceptance criteria where required.

Testing Temperatures

Many specifications require impact testing at controlled temperatures to simulate service conditions.

Hurst can perform testing at:

  • Ambient temperature

  • Sub-zero temperatures up to liquid nitrogen (-320 deg F)

  • Customer-specified test temperatures in accordance with applicable standards

Test Reports

Each Charpy impact test report includes the information necessary for specification compliance and traceability, including:

  • Test standard

  • Test temperature

  • Individual absorbed energy values

  • Average impact energy (when applicable)

  • Specimen size and orientation

  • Acceptance criteria and pass/fail evaluation (when provided)

Our in-house machine shop allows us to prepare both standard size and subsize Charpy test specimens:

  • 10mm x 10mm x 55mm (Standard)

  • 7.5mm x 10mm x 55mm

  • 5mm x 10mm x 55mm

  • 2.5mm x 10mm x 55mm
